We covered sections 13.5 and 13.9-11. We did very briefly talk about the theory (13.1-4) but that is not the main aim of this module. 13.6 is NOT in our syllabus.

For those of you who were not able to come – we did not go through new material, we just did 5 problems.

The problems are not that satisfying in that for four of them there is no unambiguous answer – but sometimes things are like that in real life. It is a case of narrowing choices down to a few possibilities rather than one specific answer.

CCA points for Class and Module Reps

Some Definitions
1. Each class (or mentor group – to use an old term) can have only one class representative and only one assistant class rep – some classes also have other posts like treasurer etc. Some classes may have no class rep.

2. Each class sometimes may have module reps so e.g. a class 1F01 may have, in addition to their class rep, a module rep for IPC and a module rep for Microbio. The role of the module rep is e.g. to help collect homework for the e.g. IPC or Microbio lecturer or to contact the students about make-up lessons etc. Their roles are limited to activities for that particular module.

In the present CCA system, each person can only have one position – so a student cannot be class rep at the same time as module rep for IPC, Microbio etc. If this is the case, we will award CCA points for the higher position only. Similarly if a person is module rep for more than one module, we will only award points for one module.

Submission of details for class and module reps

- please check if the student is the class rep or module rep. The student you deal with may be the module rep not the class rep. The advisor (or mentor) should know who the class rep is. Please also check either in the google docs document or with the class advisor that the information you submit is not contradictory.
- the default points are 2L for class rep and 1L for module rep i.e. if they do whatever is required of them. You can award up to 4L for class rep and 2L for module rep if you feel he/she has done more than the minimum required of them.

Lecturers’ (and students’) guide to checking CCA records

Please note that points may be keyed in but not confirmed until about the end of semester to allow for any corrections to be made.

For students
You can check your points in NPAL. If the points are not confirmed, they will not be included in the PEARLS tally.

For staff
(1) To check if the points have been keyed in go to Z:\TOTS – STUDENT DEVELOPMENT\CCA Points\ and look for the Excel file named List_Of_Submissions_April 2011_Semester.
(2) To check if the points for individual students are keyed in
- if it is just one or two students, go into NPAL and check
- if you wish to check the whole list which you submitted, do step (1) and note the S/No of the e-mail you sent to me, then
go to Z:\TOTS – STUDENT DEVELOPMENT\CCA Points\ and look for the folder USRQ0011 CCA Inquiry and then the Excel File. The first digit of the file corresponds to the S/No in the List_Of_Submissions_April 2011_Semester in (1) above.
Column I means Recommended P points, Column J means Recommended E points, Column K Recommended A points, Column L Recommended R points and Column M Recommended L points. and Column N Recommended S points.
